The story

Kukkarahalli Lake lies in the centre of Mysuru beside the University of Mysore's Manasagangotri campus, the Rangayana theatre and, across Hunsur Road, the Central Food Technological Research Institute. Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar had it created in 1864 to irrigate about 4,000 hectares outside the city, and it once supplied drinking water too.

The J-shaped lake covers about 62 hectares and is up to 5 metres deep, fed by the 27-kilometre Dewan Poornaiah canal. Sewage, encroachment and blocked inflows pushed it close to eutrophication, and the university and citizens' groups have since worked to protect it. Today it acts as a green lung for the city, and a 3.5-kilometre walkway with shaded stone benches runs around the shore. The Mysuru city railway station is about 3 kilometres away.
