01 — The story

The story

Jaganmohan Palace stands about 200 metres west of Mysore Palace and is now home to the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery and an auditorium. It was begun in 1856 and finished in 1861 for Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, who had been deposed after the Nagar uprising of 1830 and lost his palace to the British commission. That makes it one of the oldest modern buildings in the city.

Where the old palace was a stone citadel with a mostly wooden interior, this one was built of brick and mortar with a lighter, more comfortable plan around public and private courtyards, decorated with fine woods and precious stones. After the kingdom was restored in 1881 the family moved back, but the palace kept hosting ceremonies and evenings of music, dance and poetry. The royals last lived here in 1897, after fire destroyed the old Mysore Palace.
