The Folklore Museum in Mysuru brings together the folk traditions, rituals and crafts of Karnataka, and is housed in a building of cultural importance in the city. Its purpose is largely educational, and school groups and people studying the region's folklore are regular visitors.
The collection takes in masks, puppets and dolls, Kathakali costumes, musical instruments and small figures of kings, queens and soldiers. Besides the displays, the museum uses audio-visual shows, live performances, hands-on activities and programmes for all age groups to explain how folk customs shape the identity of the state.
