The story

Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is a densely wooded hill in Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district, rising to 1,450 metres as the highest point in Bandipur National Park. It lies in the park's core, where elephants and other wildlife roam. Fog hangs over the hill for much of the year, which gives it the prefix Himavad, while the rest of the name comes from the Venugopalaswamy (Krishna) temple on top, said to date from 1315.

The hill is about 75 kilometres from Mysuru, off the Mysuru–Ooty road some 10 kilometres from Gundlupet. Private vehicles stop at the forest check post and visitors ride a forest department minibus up the road to the temple. Only puja items such as flowers, fruit and incense may be carried, in non-plastic bags, and no one may stay overnight on the summit.
