Mudumalai Tiger Reserve covers forest in the foothills of the Nilgiris and forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is known for its Bengal tigers, while elephants, leopards and herds of chital also move through its woods. More than 260 bird species have been recorded, among them the endangered Malabar pied hornbill and the peafowl.
Jeep safaris head into the interior, with early morning drives the most popular, and there are trekking trails, nature walks and birdwatching tours. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp introduces visitors to the reserve's elephants. Ooty lies about 40 km away.
