The story

Noumahla Masjid, also spelt Noumahillah Masjid, is a historic Sunni mosque in Noumhla Mohalla, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Nawab Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech founded it in 1749 and handed it to Syed Shaji Baba; its concrete structure was finished in 1906.

During the revolt of 1857, when Rohilkhand joined the fight against British rule, the rebel leader Nawab Khan Bahadur Khan used the mosque as his headquarters, and revolutionaries met here to plan, drawing inspiration from Maulvi Mahmood Hasan's sermons. According to the mosque's caretakers, the British attacked it once they learned of these plans; Ismail Shah is said to have been killed while giving the call to prayer, and the women are said to have thrown themselves into the well rather than face the British. The caretakers also say the revolutionaries lie buried beside the mosque.
