Nana Rao Park, also known as Company Bagh, is a public park in central Kanpur near Phool Bagh. The ground is where around 200 British women and children were killed during the rebellion of 1857, an event followed by reprisals from East India Company troops. From 1858 the site was called Memorial Well, marked by a railing, a marble Gothic screen with a mournful seraph and a cross, paid for by a £30,000 levy on the townspeople. After independence the memorial was pulled down, the screen moved to the churchyard of Kanpur Memorial Church, and a park named after Nana Sahib took its place.
The circular ridge of the old well can still be seen. Statues of figures from the freedom struggle, among them Tatya Tope, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Ajizan Bai and Lala Lajpat Rai, stand in the grounds, as does Boodhha Bargad, an old banyan linked to that struggle. The park also has a swimming pool, a plant nursery, a traditional vyayamshala and playgrounds, and entry costs 10 rupees.
