Kanpur Sangrahalaya, also called the Kanpur Museum, is housed in Gandhi Bhawan at Phool Bagh, where Mall Road meets the Kanpur–Lucknow Road. The building began as a ballroom for the European merchants of Cawnpore, a city then nicknamed the Manchester of Asia. After Edward VII died in 1910 it became a memorial to his 1876 visit and was named King Edward Memorial Hall, funded by European and Indian traders. During the First World War it housed wounded British soldiers, and it was later used for European cultural events and sometimes hired out for weddings.
After 1947 the hall was renamed Gandhi Bhawan, and today it holds a municipal library alongside the museum, which opened in 1999. The exhibits tell the story of the people and events that shaped Kanpur, and include an old artillery gun from the colonial period.
