The story

The Bengaluru branch of the National Gallery of Modern Art occupies Manikyavelu Mansion, a heritage house on Palace Road set in 3.5 acres of trees, fountains and a pool. It opened on 18 February 2009 and is one of only three NGMAs in the country, alongside Delhi and Mumbai, all run by the Union Ministry of Culture. A newer gallery wing, built to match the old mansion, brings the display space to about 2,800 square metres.

The collection traces Indian art from the early 18th century onward through paintings, sculpture, graphic prints and early photographs. Highlights include miniatures, work by colonial-era artists, pieces from the Bengal School and art by post-independence modernists. Temporary national and international exhibitions rotate through, and the gallery runs talks, film screenings, workshops, school programmes and guided walks on Wednesdays and Saturdays, plus internships for students.
