The story

Narmada Kothi is a palace at Barwaha in Madhya Pradesh, built by the Holkar Maharaja of Indore State as a retreat where the royal family spent holidays and picnics before independence. It is in a European style and rests on a fortified embankment set a little higher than the river's high flood mark on the bank of the Narmada, a little east of the NH 27 bridge carrying the Khandwa–Indore road over the river.

After independence the Madhya Pradesh government took it over. The main floor became offices of the Narmada valley development project, and the top floor housed its engineers; the building still holds offices of the Narmada Valley Development Authority. Once yellow with white trim, its exterior is now light maroon with white, while the interior stays mostly yellow. In its prime it had gardens and a fountain.
