The story

Christ Church on Mall Road in Mhow was built by troops from the Warwickshire and Brecknockshire regiments, the earliest British units posted to the cantonment, and consecrated in 1823 as a garrison church. Once Anglican and now non-denominational, it still holds services, and it also draws visitors for the many commemorative plaques that regiments fixed to its inner walls during their time at Mhow.

The building follows a modified Early English Gothic style, with a teak frame, brick walls set in lime mortar and a steeple of about 10 m carrying a spire and belfry. The north and south wings were added later as congregations grew, and in 1877 the pews were fitted with rifle holders, a lesson of the 1857 uprising. Above the white marble altar of 1881 are two stained-glass windows, one of the Crucifixion and one of Jesus with the apostles. The church decayed after 1971 and has been revived since 1992.
