The story

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam spans the Krishna River on the Telangana border in Nalgonda district and is described as the largest masonry dam in India. Built between 1956 and 1967 as one of the first big projects after independence, it is about 1.6 km long and 124 m high, with 26 gates and a reservoir of 11,472 million cubic metres. Its water irrigates land in Nalgonda, Khammam, Guntur, Prakasam and Krishna districts and drives a hydroelectric plant.

Boats run on the reservoir for most of the year, and longer cruises pass the edge of the Nallamala forest. The main trip is to Nagarjunakonda island, about 45 minutes away, where Buddhist remains rescued from the flooded valley are kept along with a small museum.
