The story

The Mudumal Megalithic Menhirs stand in Narayanpet district, Telangana, and are thought to be 3,500 to 4,000 years old. They are believed to line up with events in the sky, showing how early people tracked celestial patterns, and are reported to have shaped local religious belief. The site has been placed on India's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Across 89 acres stand some 80 stones, roughly 3 to 5 metres tall, set out in circles, straight rows and other arrangements, though most of the formations were broken up and boulders cleared to irrigate nearby fields. Local people regard the stones as sacred and call them Niluralla Thimmappa, Thimmappa of the standing stones, and one menhir is worshipped as the goddess Yellamma.
