The story

The Ek Minar Mosque, the 'one-minaret mosque', stands in Raichur, Karnataka, and is a state protected monument. A Persian inscription on its threshold dates it to 919 AH (1513–14 CE), in the reign of Mahmud Shah Bahmani, and names Malik Ambar of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate as its patron. Some historic structures in its grounds were pulled down in 2016 to widen a neighbouring road, but the minaret still stands.

Indo-Islamic minarets usually stand alone as victory towers or come in symmetrical pairs, so a single minaret attached to a mosque is unusual. Rising about 20 metres over the entrance in the south-east corner of the courtyard, it is in a Persian style close to the Chand Minar and the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa, with two storeys, windows, balustraded galleries and an inner winding stair, tapering to a rounded Bahmani dome with floral decoration and a crescent finial. The entrance roof rests on eight Chalukyan pillars, and the flat-roofed prayer hall has Quranic verses and hadith on its western wall.
