The story

Mudhai Devi temple stands on a raised artificial mound in Waghali village, Chalisgaon tehsil, in the Khandesh region of Maharashtra. Built around 1150-1200 in the Hemadpanti manner, it was declared a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1914, and it counts among the more important early medieval temples where a goddess is worshipped.

It faces east and has a star-shaped plan, with a sanctum, ardhamandapa, mandapa and porch on 24 pillars. The shikhara is gone, replaced by a later roof of slabs and concrete added for protection. Standing images of Chandika, Surya and Ganesha mark the north, west and south walls. The doorframe has five shakhas with the navagrahas above, and inside the sanctum is an Uma-Maheshwar with Nandi. Waghali has a railway station, though express trains do not stop, and Chalisgaon Junction is 11 km away.
