01 — The story

The story

Patnadevi lies about 18 km south-west of Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district, within the Gautala Autramghat Sanctuary and ringed by the high hills of the Sahyadri. The site holds two shrines: the Chandika Devi Temple and a Hemadpanthi temple to Mahadev. Chandika Mata here is the family deity (kuldevta) of many Hindu castes and tribes, and devotees still bring rice for puja as part of their family rites.

In earlier times this was Patna, also called Vijjalgad, the capital of a province governed under the Yadava kings by their tributaries. Their Mandlik rulers are credited with building the Chandika Devi Temple in 1128. The 12th-century mathematician and astronomer Bhaskaracharya (Bhaskara II) lived in an ashram at Patnadevi, and he is said to have composed his major work, the Siddhanta Shiromani, here.
