The story

Mubarak Mandi is a cluster of palaces on a high cliff in Jammu's Old City, looking across the Tawi to the newer part of town. Raja Dhruv Dev began it in 1710, and later rulers kept adding to it. Maharaja Ranbir Singh, who reigned from 1856 to 1885, built palaces here for himself, his queen and his sons, including the Gol Ghar and the Sheesh Mahal. The royal household moved to Hari Niwas Palace in 1925, though the complex stayed the seat of political power.

Its buildings, mixing several architectural styles, are arranged around a series of courtyards: the Darbar Hall, Pink Palace, Royal Courts, Nawa Mahal, Rani Charak Palace, Hawa Mahal and Tosha Khana among them. Parts now hold government offices, courts and the Dogra Art Museum.
