Marve Beach is at Malad in Mumbai's western suburbs, an area whose native communities include the East Indians, the Somvanshi Kshatriya Pathares and the Kolis. The strip of land from Aksa to Marve was once one of several islands off the west coast of Salsette; they seem to have stayed separate until about 1808, and in 1882 could still be reached at low tide by wading across the inlets.
Ferries leave from the north end for Manori island, and two-wheelers can go aboard, as well as for the amusement parks of Essel World and Water Kingdom. BEST bus 272 runs from Malad station (west), and auto-rickshaws and taxis are available at all hours. The beach is narrow and movement along it is restricted by the INS Hamla naval base, and swimming is unsafe because of swift currents and sinking sand. A sea link between Manori and Marve is being built.
