01 — The story

The story

Maravanthe Beach lies on the Karnataka coast in Udupi district, where National Highway 66 runs right along the shore. With the Souparnika River just inland of the road and the Arabian Sea to the west, the strip has an unusual setting. The long stretch of golden sand is a quiet stop, and both sunrise and sunset can be watched from here.

Local legend links the name to Marasura, a demon king said to have fought the gods on this shore and stained the sand red with his blood. Dolphins, jellyfish and crabs are among the sea life found here. Swimming is popular, and jet skis, parasailing and banana boats are offered.
