01 — The story

The story

Anjanadri Hill rises from the boulder country on the far bank of the Tungabhadra River from Hampi, in the area linked with Kishkindha of the Ramayana. Hindu belief holds that Hanuman, also called Anjaneya after his mother Anjana, was born here, and a temple to him sits on the summit.

Pilgrims make the climb to the hilltop shrine as an act of devotion. From the top the view takes in paddy fields, coconut groves, rocky hillocks, the winding river and the ruins around Hampi, and sunrise and sunset draw many visitors. Travellers coming from Hampi cross the Tungabhadra and continue by road to the foot of the hill. The cooler, clear months are the most comfortable for the ascent.
