The story

Ranganatha Temple is a Vishnu temple in Anegundi, the old fortified town across the Tungabhadra from Hampi, and dates from the 14th century. Built in the Vijayanagara style on a broad plan, it has a tall gopuram at the entrance and walls carved with scenes from ancient lore, and it remains a place of worship.

The main image shows Vishnu as Ranganatha, lying on the serpent Anantha. He has four arms, two of them holding the chakra and the conch, and Brahma, with four faces and four arms, rises on a stem from his navel. His consorts Lakshmi and Bhudevi attend him. The shrine is often combined with the other sights of Anegundi on a trip from Hampi.
