The story

Malankara Dam is a gravity dam built for irrigation across the Thodupuzha river, a tributary of the Muvattupuzha, to hold the water released from the Moolamattom power house. It is part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project, and a small power station on it, with three turbines of 3.5 MW each, produces about 44 million units of electricity a year.

The artificial lake covers about 11 square kilometres beside the Thodupuzha–Moolamattom road, State Highway 33. Unlike the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams, Malankara stays open to visitors through the year, and the reservoir is used for boating and fishing. A park was being built on a 15-acre island next to it.
