Machindragad sits on a lone, round-topped hill east of its base village in Walwa taluka, Sangli district, roughly 20 km from Karad. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built it in 1676.
Though called a fort, its summit shows no walls or bastions today; what remains are a few cannons and some rock-cut water cisterns. The Pratinidhi held it until Bapu Gokhale of the Peshwas took it in 1810, and Gokhale kept it until it was handed to a British force under Colonel Hewitt without a fight.
