The story

The Pohale Caves (also Pohala or Pawala Caves) form a Buddhist cave group in Kolhapur district, roughly 15 km north-east of Kolhapur. They were cut into a rocky area close to Jyotiba's hill and are fairly plain in style.

The main excavation is a large vihara about 34 ft square, its central hall lined with 14 columns on three sides and ringed by 22 cells, each around 7 ft long, 5 ft wide and 7 ft high. The group also includes a chaitya, and a third cave containing a teacher's raised seat cut from the rock, together with a water cistern.
