The story

Maa Jhanjiri Mangala Temple stands at Jhanjiri Mangala Square in Cuttack, Odisha, and is dedicated to Mangala, the presiding deity of the city. It is described as ancient and as one of the oldest temples in Cuttack. Legend holds that the land was once forest and that a priest living there dreamed of the goddess, who asked him to build her a small temple. Villagers of the area built the present temple.

The annual Durga Puja is when the temple and its surroundings are heavily decorated, with lights, bamboo and ply gates, and paper triangles. In December 2015 thieves broke in and took gold and silver ornaments valued at 4 or 5 lakh rupees, part of a series of thefts from old temples across the city; those accused were arrested in January 2016.
