The story

Kanjia Lake is a natural lake at the northern edge of Bhubaneswar. The open water covers 75 hectares within a wetland of 105 hectares, and the lake is part of the Nandankanan Zoological Park, where visitors take boats out on it; there is also a scuba diving facility. It is recognised as a wetland of national importance and helps keep the city's ecology in balance.

The lake supports 37 species of birds, 20 of reptiles, 10 of amphibians, 46 of fish and three of prawns, along with dozens of submerged, floating and emergent water plants. Quarrying, waste dumping and haphazard building along its edges now threaten it.
