The story

Odisha State Maritime Museum sits on the bank of the Mahanadi in Cuttack, on a site of more than four acres. It occupies the old Jobra workshop, a Maritime Engineering Workshop set up under British rule in 1869 to build, repair and maintain vessels used on the waters of Bihar, Bengal and Odisha. The workshop lost its role once railways and larger dockyards took over, and lay neglected until restoration began in 2007. The museum opened in 2017.

Its galleries cover the restoration itself, Odisha's old sea trade with places such as Bali, traditional boat building and the workshop's restored original tools. Others deal with rituals tied to sea voyages, historic navigation instruments such as sand clocks and vernier callipers, and scale models of monuments along the Odisha coast.
