01 — The story

The story

The Lower Manair Dam holds back the Manair, a tributary of the Godavari, at Alugunur village on the edge of Karimnagar. It was built as part of the Sriram Sagar project to bring irrigation and drinking water to a district that often ran short. Work started in 1974 and the dam was completed in 1985; its canals now serve more than 163,000 hectares of farmland.

The structure is mostly an earth embankment, with rock-fill and masonry sections, spillways and sluice gates. It runs for about 10,741 m and stands 41 m above the riverbed, impounding a reservoir of around 621 million cubic metres. The wide sheet of water, with green banks and low hills around it, is a popular place for an outing from the town.
