The story

Lokanarkavu Temple is an ancient temple to the goddess Durga at Memunda in Kerala's Kozhikode district, 4 km from Vatakara. The name is a short form of Lokamalayarkavu, a world (lokam) of hill (mala), river (aaru) and sacred grove (kavu). Vatakara station is 5 km away and Kannur airport 54 km.

The temple is associated with the legendary hero Thacholi Othenan, and Kalaripayattu practitioners still seek the goddess's blessing before their debut. Its two annual festivals are a thirty-day Mandala Utsavam in Vrischikam (November–December) and the Pooram in Meenam (March–April), a week-long celebration that opens with flag-hoisting and ends with Arattu. During the festivals the temple presents Poorakkali, a folk dance resembling Kalaripayattu, found only here.
