The story

The Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswami Temple, in the eastern part of Thalassery, is widely called the Brass Pagoda after the copper sheeting on its roof. It is one of the five main shrines to Rama in Kerala, with Thrinayamkudam, Triprayar, Thiruvilluamala and Kadavallur. Tipu Sultan's troops damaged part of it in the 18th century, though it is believed to have escaped destruction.

In the same century it served as an outpost of the Thalassery fort, and East India Company officials met local leaders in its precincts to sign treaties. The temple stands on a raised plot of 2.75 hectares beside a tank, the Chira, that covers more than a hectare. Chakyar Koothu is performed here as a ritual, a right held by the Mani Chakyar family, and the seven-day annual festival begins on Vishu in Medam.
