The story

The Kadalur Point Lighthouse stands on a rocky promontory at Kadalur, near Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, facing the Arabian Sea. In the 18th century the headland was known as Cotta Point. The light was commissioned in 1909 to warn ships away from the submerged Sacrifice Rock, about 10 kilometres out, after a series of groundings; it is believed a wreck on the point's rocks led to its building, and remains of that wreck can still be seen.

The tower is a round, gently tapering column of stone masonry 34 metres high, painted in black and white bands and set straight onto bedrock. Inside, 246 plastered steps and then 15 wooden ones spiral up to the gallery, with the light 57 metres above mean sea level. It still turns its original Chance Brothers 700 mm lens, first lit by a paraffin vapour burner and since 1996 by a metal-halide lamp, and the beam carries 23 nautical miles.
