01 — The story

The story

Koti Teertha is a man-made tank in the temple town of Gokarna, close to the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and is one of the main places of ritual bathing there. Its water is said to be fed by many springs, and pilgrims come throughout the year to bathe, perform rites for their ancestors and immerse idols.

Temples line one side of the tank, while houses and mathas stand along the other, linked by narrow lanes and shaded by tall coconut palms. Many devotees believe a dip here cleanses the soul, and bathing in the tank is often part of a pilgrimage to Gokarna.
