Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple stands at Legship in Gyalshing district, Sikkim, on the banks of the Rangeet River. Known to the Kirati people as Kirateshwar Mahadev Thaan, and to many simply as the Shiv Mandir, it is a Hindu pilgrimage site linked to episodes of the Mahabharata. Hindu belief holds that Shiva, pleased by Arjuna's penance, appeared to him here as Kirateshwar, the hunter lord of the Kiratas, and gave him his blessing for success in the coming war. The main object of worship is a stone linga that people say appeared here miraculously.
The grounds also hold temples to Rama and Durga. The main festivals are Bala Chaturdashi in November–December and Maha Shivaratri in February or March, and many come in the belief that a sincere visit grants wishes, especially for children, peace and good health.
