01 — The story

The story

Singhik is a village in Mangan district of North Sikkim, about 70 km by road from Gangtok, and its roadside viewpoint is one of the best places on the North Sikkim highway to see the Khangchendzonga range, which includes the third-highest mountain on earth. Mt Siniolchu is also in view on clear days, and below the lookout the Teesta can be seen joining the Kanaka river in the valley.

The viewpoint is at its best at sunrise, when the snow peaks catch the first light. The forests around the village hold birds such as the Himalayan monal, the satyr tragopan and the lammergeier. Singhik also serves as a base for trekking, mountain biking and rafting, and for visits to Phodong Monastery and to Dzongu, the reserve set aside for the Lepcha community. March to May and September to October are the usual seasons for clear views.
