The story

Sri Karinjeshwara Temple is a Shiva temple on the top of Karinja Hill in the Kodyamale hills, Kavalamudur village, Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada, about 1,000 feet above sea level. Roughly 600 steps lead up to it. The temple is in two parts: Shiva's shrine on the clifftop, and a shrine to Parvati and Ganesha halfway up. There are ponds called Gadha Teertha at the foot of the hill and Ungusta Teertha midway.

Monkeys live on the hill and are held in reverence. Every day after noon a food offering, mainly rice, is set out for them on a big rectangular stone slab before the Shiva temple; the custom is called Vanara Anna Seva, and the troop's leader, known as Karinja Dadda, takes the first bite.
