01 — The story

The story

The Mangaladevi Temple is an old shrine in the historic part of Mangaluru, dedicated to the goddess Mangaladevi. Local legend says the city itself is named after her, which gives the temple a special place in Mangaluru's identity.

The goddess, worshipped as an embodiment of the divine feminine, is enshrined at the centre of the complex. Carved walls and sculptures of various deities recall the craftsmanship of earlier times, and the grounds, scented with incense and filled with chanting, are a calm setting for prayer. Pilgrims and travellers alike visit for both its religious role and its link to the city's history.
