01 — The story

The story

Ullal Beach lies on the Arabian Sea coast close to Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada and is one of the better-known stretches of sand around the city. It is a calm, uncrowded shore where fishing boats bring in the day's catch and visitors sit out under umbrellas with tender coconut water.

The sea here is used for surfing, paddleboarding and simple swimming in the shallows, and the rocky parts of the shoreline can be explored on foot. Walking paths lead inland through coconut plantations and patches of mangrove where coastal birds are common, and dolphins are sometimes seen offshore. Local eateries serve coastal Karnataka food such as fish curry, prawn dishes and Mangalorean fish fry, along with filter coffee.
