The Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, also called the Pilikula Planetarium, is part of the 370-acre Pilikula Nisargadhama in Mangaluru, also known as the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Biological Park. It was the first 3D planetarium in India and the first in the country with a hybrid of 8K digital and opto-mechanical projection. Begun in 2013 to mark Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary, it ran over schedule and opened on 1 March 2018, built by the Pilikula Regional Science Centre with state funding.
The dome is 18 m across and seats 170 people in chairs that tilt by 15 degrees. A Megastar IIA optical star projector works alongside an active stereo 3D digital system made by Evans & Sutherland in the US. Shows are aimed at students and the general public who want to see stars and planetary systems.
