01 — The story

The story

The Kadri Manjunatha Temple sits on the green slopes of Kadri Hill in Mangaluru and is one of the city's oldest places of worship. Shiva is venerated here as Manjunatha, and the temple is known for a mix of Hindu and Buddhist elements in its art and history, which sets it apart from other shrines along the coast.

The sanctum holds the main image of Shiva, and the surrounding halls carry detailed carving. In the courtyard the air is heavy with incense and the sound of chanting, and a sacred tank on the grounds is home to tortoises, kept as a reminder that all living things are held sacred. The temple draws both regular devotees and travellers interested in its long past.
