01 — The story

The story

Kamna Devi Temple crowns Prospect Hill, one of the seven hills of Shimla, above Boileauganj. A steep road climbs to it, and the temple is surrounded by deodar, pine, oak and rhododendron, with views over southern Shimla as far as the Tara Devi Temple. The Rana of Junga built it in the 18th century, though the exact date is unknown, in a local hill style that does not fully follow the Kath Kuni or pagoda forms seen elsewhere in Himachal Pradesh.

It is counted among the most important temples in Shimla, and pilgrims from across the country come to ask the goddess for help, particularly with family matters and marriage. Being inside the city, it is easier to reach than many temples: buses run to Boileauganj from the Old Bus Stand and elsewhere, and from there the top is reached on foot, by taxi or by private vehicle.
