Summer Hill is one of the seven hills on which Shimla is built, lying about 5 km from the town centre. Its main landmark is the Viceregal Lodge, built in the British period as the residence of the Viceroy of India and now home to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, which runs guided tours.
The roads up the hill open onto views of the foothills and valleys, particularly at sunrise and sunset, and walking paths pass through pine forest and apple orchards. Summer Hill is also a stop on the narrow-gauge toy train, part of a UNESCO World Heritage route.
