Sankat Mochan Temple in Shimla is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and also has shrines to Lord Shiva, the Navgrahas and Ganesha. Its architecture borrows from South Indian temple traditions.
The temple traces its origin to Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj, better known as Neem Karoli Baba, who is believed to have gained spiritual powers from Hanuman after years of penance as a youth. He built a simple hut on this site in the late 1950s and wished to raise a Hanuman temple here. Lieutenant Governor Raja Bajrang Bahadur Bhandari and Shri Bhagwan Sahai laid the foundation stone in 1962, and the temple was consecrated in 1966. The complex now covers 18.8 bighas.
