01 — The story

The story

Gorton Castle in Shimla was completed in 1904 to designs by the architect Sir Swinton Jacob and first housed the office of the Accountant General of Punjab, acting as a regional seat of British administration. The three-storey building covers more than 40,000 square feet and holds 125 rooms on a hilltop site.

Its style mixes Gothic and Jacobethan elements, with carvings, gargoyles, arches and turrets on the outside and grand staircases, vaulted ceilings, woodwork and stained glass within. The castle still houses government offices and is used for cultural events.
