The story

The Kaleshwari Group of Monuments, also called Kaleshwari-ni Nal, lies near Lavana village in Khanpur taluka of Mahisagar district, Gujarat, near Lunavada, beside a stream in Hidimba Van, named for Hidimba. The site is thought to have been chosen for its position on the old Gujarat–Rajasthan trade route. Its ruins, built between the 10th and 16th centuries across the foothills and a hillock, are State Protected Monuments, restored by the state archaeology department in the 2000s.

A 10th-century Shiva temple was later rebuilt in reduced form as the Ghummatvalu Mandir, which enshrines Mahishasuramardini with a lingam; its old assembly hall is now the Kaleshwari Mata temple, where a Nataraja image is worshipped as the local goddess. There are an 11th–12th century kund and twin stepwells of the 14th–15th centuries. The Shikar Madhi, a hunting lodge put together by Vakhat Singh of Lunavada in the 18th century from older remains, carries erotic panels and 10th-century images. A flight of 230 steps climbs to further ruins on the hillock.
