The story

Kalan Masjid, whose name means 'chief mosque', stands in Old Delhi and dates from the 14th century. It is also called Kali Masjid, the black mosque, a name that may simply be a corruption of Kalan. Khan-i-Jahan Maqbul Tilangani built it in 1387, under Firuz Shah Tughlaq; it is one of seven mosques he raised.

The sandstone building is oblong, about 43 metres by 37, with two storeys rising to 20 metres. A flight of steps climbs to the entrance. The doorway carries a low dome between two conical columns, and above it a marble slab bears a Naskh inscription recording the date of completion and naming Khan Jahan and Firuz Shah. Inside, the square plan is split into four quadrants.
