The story

Jambu Zoo is on the outskirts of Jammu city at Nagrota and opened on 28 May 2023. Its first phase covers 70 hectares, with a planned expansion to 163 hectares in all. The first animals came from the much smaller Manda Zoo, which had only 2.5 hectares, among them leopards, Himalayan black bears and sambar.

The collection has grown through exchanges with other zoos. A pair of Asiatic lions arrived from Gujarat in November 2023 and live in a heated, ventilated enclosure of over 5,500 square metres; two female cubs, Kutki and Bhunki, were born to them in March 2025. A Royal Bengal tiger came the same month as the lions, Indian wolves from Junagadh in 2025, striped hyenas from Nahargarh near Jaipur, and the first hippopotamuses from Chennai in March 2026. Other residents include Himalayan brown bears, blackbuck, nilgai, leopard cats, emus, gharials, crocodiles and Indian pythons.
