Jaigarh Fort crowns the Cheel ka Teela, the Hill of Eagles, about 15 km from Jaipur, and was built as the forward defence for the Amer Fort and palace below. Sawai Jai Singh II commissioned it in 1726 and it carries his name; jai means victory and garh means fort. Its red sandstone walls run for more than 3 km and can be seen from almost anywhere inside Amer Fort, while the ramparts look out over the surrounding hills.
Its position on the Aravalli ridge made it very hard to attack, and it guarded the Amer kingdom for a long period. In the Mughal era it became the main cannon foundry of the Kachhwahas. Under Jai Singh II its workshops produced the Jaivana, described as the largest cannon on wheels in the world, which still stands inside the fort.
