The story

The Indian Music Experience Museum in Jayaprakash Nagar, Bengaluru, opened in 2019 as India's first interactive music museum. A non-profit backed by the Brigade Group, it spreads over 50,000 sq ft on three floors and covers Indian music from Hindustani and Carnatic classical traditions to Bollywood and indie pop.

Nine themed galleries use instruments, artefacts and multimedia displays. The Stars Gallery holds memorabilia of M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ustad Bismillah Khan and other musicians; Songs of Struggle traces music in the independence movement, including versions of Vande Mataram; Living Traditions explains ragas, talas and gharanas; and Contemporary Expressions looks at Indi-pop and rock. Outside, a Sound Garden has ten interactive installations, among them a Humming Stone, a Singing Stone and a Storm Drum. A Learning Centre runs workshops and classes in Carnatic and Hindustani vocal, mridangam and guitar, and the museum hosts live performances.
