The story

The Indian Air Force Heritage Museum in Sector 18, Chandigarh, is India's first heritage centre devoted to the air force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opened it on 8 May 2023; it covers 15,600 square feet and is run by the Chandigarh Administration. Its displays trace the IAF's part in the country's wars, using virtual and augmented reality, holograms, simulators and electro-mechanical exhibits.

Five decommissioned aircraft are on show, among them an HAL HPT-32 Deepak trainer, a MiG-21 and a Folland Gnat, as well as the Air Force Kanpur 1, which Air Vice Marshal Harjinder Singh built in 1958. Visitors can try flight simulators and see SAM-III Pechora missiles, scale models from the Tejas and Su-30MKI to the C-295 and Dhruv helicopter, murals of campaigns such as the 1948 war, and 3D dioramas of recent operations including the Balakot airstrike. One section honours women officers of the IAF.
