01 — The story

The story

Chandigarh's Government Museum and Art Gallery grew out of the 1947 partition. Its core holdings, including Gandharan sculpture and Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings, once belonged to the Central Museum in Lahore and were kept for a time in Amritsar and Shimla before reaching Chandigarh. The museum opened in 1968.

Le Corbusier designed the building, which sits in the city's Cultural Complex next to the College of Art, another of his works. It is made of exposed reinforced concrete and lit from above through eight saw-tooth shafts, while water troughs on the roof cut glare and help regulate temperature. Gargoyles drain rain into pools on the concrete plaza, which also holds an outdoor sculpture court, and tall narrow aerators let air move across the galleries.
